Roles - at the Centre
All sorts of activities take place at the Beacon Centre. You can work with children or the elderly, help with crafts or take more of an office-based role helping with fundraising. There are plenty of choices and loads of opportunities.
Youth Club Assistant
What it involves:
- Helping set up and clear the youth club area
- Supervising and helping children in a range of areas, for example arts and crafts or sports
- Serving drinks and snacks
Talking Newspaper Assistant
What it involves:
1. Recording audio transcriptions of newspapers for visually impaired people
- Reading from a newspaper or other various articles while being recorded in a recording booth
2. Supporting the administration side of the department by:
- Emptying and sorting out postal wallets
- Erasing information on cassette tapes
- Copying and packing of newly recorded cassette tapes
Social Group Assistant
What it involves:
- Supporting staff in various activities (including quizzes and raffles)
- Guiding and assisting people who use our services
- Serving and clearing away refreshments
Recreational Assistant
What it involves:
- Supporting people who use our services with crafts and other recreational activities, including sewing, painting, making stuffed animals, playing bowls, playing pool
- One to one work is sometimes required, but all sessions are supervised by staff members
Fundraising Administrator
What it involves:
- Helping out with a range of office duties
- Extracting stamps from envelopes ready for collection
- Counting money
- Sending out letters
- Inputting data into the computer using various software packages
- Researching on the internet
All training will be provided – you don’t need to have experience of current computer packages
Eye Infirmary – Information Desk Volunteer
What it involves:
- Giving out information about the centre, welfare benefits, aids and equipment, etc
- Provide a listening ear to patients
- Liaising with clinical staff (consultants and nurses)
- Maintaining records and statistics
- Answering the telephone and dealing with enquiries
- Ensuring constant supply of information leaflets
- Signposting patients – directing around the clinic
- Ensuring DVDs, situated at the desk, are constantly in play
- Demonstrating visual aids, eg clocks, watches and magnification aids
- Undergoing training as required – we provide all training for this role
Coffee Bar Assistant
What it involves:
- Preparing and serving tea, coffee and light snacks to people using our day centre
- Handling small amounts of money
- Helping keep the seating area clean and tidy in addition to washing up
